                              The Marinduque Island Mining Accident

Pollution, in general, can cause damages on natural resource systems which provide valuable though unpriced services to society. Often times, the harmful effects of pollution are not considered by the polluter in decision-making, thus creating excessive environmental externalities. To estimate the externalities generated by pollution, it is necessary to develop economic measures of values of the environmental and resource services provided by the affected resource systems.

ANOTHER DISASTER LOOMS IN MARINDUQUE                  5 April 2002
Six years ago, a tailings pond operated by the Marcopper Mining Corporation collapsed in Marinduque, burying riverbeds in three million tons of toxic mine wastes. Today another disaster looms in the island province. Experts commissioned by Placer Dome, the Canadian company which operated Marcopper, say that there is an imminent possibility that the Tapian Pit, which leaked in 1966, and the Maguilaguila siltation dam, which already burst in 1993, will both cave in and spill tons of toxic wastes in already devastated Marinduque.

HydroGlobe (TM), an innovative supplier of highly effective, low-cost technology to remove arsenic and heavy metals from drinking water and wastewater, was founded by engineers and scientists from the Center fror Environmental Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology. (Patent Pending)
